WORKSHOP TITLE: TECHNICAL WRITING SKILLS

LENGTH AND SIZE: Two days - Maximum 25 students

INSTRUCTOR: Carolyn (Casey) Reynolds

COURSE OBJECTIVE: This workshop provides the student an opportunity to review and apply the principles of technical composition; to clarify and streamline style while preserving the integrity of technical content.


COURSE CONTENT:

bullet Evaluating the assets and liabilities of technical language
bullet Understanding the difference between academic and on-the-job writing
bullet Targeting the objective and the reader; adapting to both
bullet Organizing and outlining raw data
bullet Choosing a format to suit the content and purpose
bullet Writing to suite the reader’s level of knowledge
bullet Practicing the differing styles of informing vs. persuading
bullet Eliminating ambiguity and the potential for misinterpretation
bullet Mastering specific techniques for coherence and clarity
bullet Writing and in-class testing of instructions
bullet Structuring a report: sections, headings, illustrations
bullet Editing for technical integrity and readable style
