1. CONTEMPORARY NAVY WRITING


With the recent re-issue of the Navy writing guide "Just Plain English," this 
popular workshop is newly contemporary. Students apply specific 
recommendations from the guide, learning to master the lucid, compact writing 
style now freshly endorsed by the office of the CNO. Constantly updated 
examples of Navy writing — good, bad, and incredible — demonstrate how plain 
English can make written communication easier and more efficient for both 
writer and reader.

2. EXECUTIVE UPDATE — NAVY WRITING

Good communication management calls for consistency and clarity in 
organizational documentation. This class offers a condensed review of the 
CNO-approved writing guide, "Just Plain English," a short reproducible style 
manual that can be distributed and used as a model throughout the 
organization. Applying its principles encourages clear, compact, and 
consistent writing at every level.

3. GRAMMAR BRUSH-UP FOR WRITERS

Focuses on the most common mechanical errors in business and technical 
writing. A fast-paced refresher in "writer's English", including grammar, 
punctuation, vocabulary, and usage. Complies with current GPO Style Manual. 
Appropriate for professionals.

Program Length: 2 days • Maximum Attendees: 25

4. MANAGING OTHER PEOPLE’S WRITING

Identifies and addresses common problems in the management of organizational 
writing. Helps set standards, develop cooperation, and reduce conflict in the 
review process. Provides guidelines and practice in evaluating and clarifying 
written communication.

Program Length: 2 days • Maximum Attendees: 25

5. EFFECTIVE WRITING SKILLS

Provides ample job-related practice in writing for specific purposes — 
informing, persuading, evaluating, and more. Covers problem areas in 
organization, paragraphing, sentence structure, word choice, punctuation. 
Includes do’s and don’ts of electronic mail. Reflects current Navy style 
recommendations.

6. MAKING MEETINGS WORK

Outlines the steps in planning and conducting a good meeting, from agenda to 
adjournment. Demonstrates how to stimulate group participation, cooperation, 
and creativity. Offers valuable tips and classroom practice for both leaders 
and attendees.

7. PLAIN ENGLISH IN GOVERNMENT WRITING

Now it's official. Bureaucratic gobbledygook is out, clarity is in. By 
presidential memo, government employees are directed to use "plain English" 
in any document providing instructions or explanations to the general public. 
This workshop teaches user-friendly writing skills and encourages clear, 
understandable written communication. Appropriate for any government agency. 
(This is the non-military version of workshop #1.)

8. PRESENTATION SKILLS (for Briefers, Trainers, and Facilitators)

Reduces "presenter’s panic" by showing how to take charge of the major 
elements in a public speaking situation: voice, gestures, body language, 
visual aids, equipment, environment. Also how to hold audience attention, 
respond to questions, deal with special needs and personalities. Provides 
information and practice in organizing and formating subject matter for 
differing purposes.

9. PROOFREADING AND EDITING SKILLS

Sharpens the eye-for-error and offers useful tips for improving the proofing 
process; covers common problem areas in punctuation, number usage, grammar, 
spelling, and more. Provides practice in individual and team proofing. 
Appropriate for writers, editors, and secretaries.

10. TECHNICAL WRITING

Promotes precision and clarity in reports, instructions, work statements, and 
other technical material. Offers practice in organizing, formating, and 
writing to suit the stated objective and targeted audience.
